With vegan restaurants and plant-based junk food spots hitting Amsterdam on a weekly basis, it takes a lot to stand out in the city’s forward-thinking food scene. Maybe that’s why newcomer Deer Mama caters to everyone’s needs (even us, just dipping our toes in the trend), dishing out better-than-average burgers, Indian-inspired street food snacks and desserts that make you question if they REALLY are vegan. Free of eggs they are, and it’s a mindblowing experience you don’t want to miss.
But it’s not just Deer Mama’s approachable menu that catches your attention. Everything is served in an urban-looking space, complete with bright neon signs and highly Instagrammable trays (reminiscent of By Chloe in NYC), while the speakers play oldschool hip-hop tunes. Yes, you can easily take your boyfriend here – without him standing out from the crowd.
Back to dessert. I have eaten countless cookies in my life, and somehow, Deer Mama’s vegan varieties taste better than the real deal. Cookie dough cookies, oozing with melted chocolate chips in a soft cake-like center, is what you’re ordering. Dip that in a sinful soft serve (or one of their milkshakes), and you’ve got yourself a match made in heaven.
If cookies aren’t your thing (we need to talk), try the wonderfully fluffy cinnamon buns (made with an unexpected ingredient of miso, providing a crackling glaze on top), sprinkled donuts or pretty much anything with a brownie base.
