Dutchies have never been big on donuts, because there simply aren’t a lot of donut stores around. Let alone freshly made donuts, packed with seasonal fillings or decked with creative toppings. Peejays Doughnuts definitely spotted the gap in the market, bringing a taste of America to Amsterdam.
So besides a classic vanilla glaze, you’ll find a droolworthy line-up of dessert hybrids and all-American flavors. Think crème brulée, filled with custard cream and covered in a crackly layer of caramelised sugar, or a meringue donut stuffed lavishly with lemon curd. Simpler options are just as satisfying though, including berry glaze (bursting with a fresh berry flavor), and a vanilla variety topped with thousands of sprinkles.
My favorite gives New York’s iconic dessert a Dutch upgrade. Smothered in cream cheese, the blackberry cheesecake donut is finished off with a “speculoos” cookie crumble, which is a gingerbread-like cookie spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and a whole lot of goodness. The result is a donut that’s fluffy, crunchy and comforting all at once.
On a very sad note, Peejays Doughnuts will be closing by the end of the month, so you have only have a few more days to try their donuts…
