Sea Salt and Chocolate

A café dedicated to all things sweet, especially chocolate...

Sea Salt and Chocolate might be tucked away in an unassuming street of Amsterdam’s Pijp district; a heavenly smell of sweets is guaranteed to capture your attention. Slightly frustrated with the lack of top-quality treats in the city, self-taught baker Renjana started her café-meets-take-away venture to satisfy those with a sweet tooth. But don’t be fooled by the name, Sea Salt & Chocolate has more in store than that contrasting combination of flavors – it simply nods to her love for experimenting in the kitchen, bringing you ever-changing specials alongside a strong line-up of classics.

Most desserts take inspiration from America, including red velvet cake (layered with cream cheese), key lime cheesecake (perfectly creamy and smooth), and peanut butter cupcakes, while others are decidedly British (look no further than sticky toffee pudding).

Some creations simply have a mind of their own, which are downright delicious and genius: apple crumble disguised as a bar (perfect for on the go), a dark chocolate cake with caramel on top and in-between, or red velvet cookies buttoned with white chocolate chips. Never dry, almost moist and more-ish, everything delivers on structure and flavor.

But what I love most – a seriously underrated feature in Amsterdam – is that most treats are served warm. Because, in case you didn’t know, the oven is where the magic happens, making those chocolate chips melt, brownies extra ooey and gooey, and every dessert a whole lot more comforting.
