The Best Cinnamon Buns in Copenhagen

You can’t visit Copenhagen without trying a kanelsnegle, a delightful Danish-style cinnamon roll decked with chocolate or a sugar glaze – or both, if you’re lucky. I dedicated my short yet sweet weekend to these sought-after treats, rolling from one bakery to the other to taste them all (all puns intended). This is my guide to Copenhagen’s best cinnamon buns…

SKT Peders Bageri

They say you never forget your first love. Well, I’ll never forget my first cinnamon bun, which was an enormous gooey round of dough loaded with cinnamon in every layer. Head over heals, I had to come back for more. Turns out, my first cinnamon bun was just a short romance, because I found true love in the perfectly crisp puff pastry, covered in chocolate and a dollop of cream. Make sure to come early because they sell out fast!

Brødflov Copenhagen - cinnamon bun

Brødflov

A cozy corner bakery in Frederiksburg, Brødflov might not be centrally located but it’s definitely worth the trek. The cinnamon bun is tall, super soft and laden with sticky cinnamon sugar throughout. If you unswirl it and find your way to the middle, there’s a lovely gob of dough that is waiting to comfort your soul.

Meyers Bageri

The tiniest of bakeries happens to bake the biggest cinnamon bun in town. It’s cake-like and fluffy, with twisted layers of buttery dough alternating brown sugar and cinnamon. Their chocolate version is more traditional: a flakey pocket of pastry bursting with smooth chocolate sauce. Meyers Bageri also does amazing-looking buns with blueberry or rhubarb, but they sadly weren’t available when I popped in (twice).

Anderson Bakery - cinnamon bun with chocolate

Anderson Bakery

Crispy, flakey, cinnamon spice and everything nice, it’s easy to see why Anderson Bakery has been around for over 50 years. While operated by a Japanese baker, the baked goods are decidedly Danish, using nothing but time-honored baking traditions. Oh and that swirl of milky chocolate on top adds the perfect final touch.

Lagerkagehuset - cinnamon bun

Lagerkagehuset

Located on every corner in Copenhagen, Lagerkagehuset is actually a bakery chain. But don’t make my mistake and let that put you off, because their cinnamon roll is light, airy and scrumptious. Rather than being sticky or soft, the sugar glaze has a nice crispy bite to it. My only regret is not trying more, and going there sooner.
