The best cookies in Amsterdam

The Best Cookies in Amsterdam - Van Wonderen
A guide beyond the city's famous stroopwaffles...

The famous Dutch stroopwaffles, thin caramelly wafers wrapped around sticky syrup, might be on top of your Amsterdam-eat-list, but let’s not forget about cookies of a different kind. Dark chocolate oozing with white chocolate, hearty oaties popping with cranberries and even vegan varieties that are as soft as butter – this is my guide to Amsterdam’s best cookies.

Van Wonderen Stroopwafels - stroopwaffle with kletskop

Van Wonderen Stroopwafels

Giving tradition a playful twist, this stroopwaffle store elevates the Dutch-style cookies with slathering of chocolate and your topping of choice. So besides the usual hot, soft and sizzling sandwich of caramel, expect extra decadence in forms of mini marshmallows, m&ms or more crumbled cookies on top. Try kletskoppen (super crunchy thins made with caramelised sugar), bastogne (cinnamon-spiced chunks) or the one and only oreos.

Van Stapele Koekmakerij Amsterdam - dark chocolate cookies with white chocolate

Van Stapele Koekmakerij

This Amsterdam institution is living proof that less is more – Van Stapele Koekmakerij serves just one type of cookie, attracting long lines of curious cookie lovers and locals alike. So if you don’t like outreagously rich, double chocolate chunks, oozing with melted white chocolate in the center, I have bad news for you.

De Drie Graefjes - Cookie With White Chocolate and Macadamia

De Drie Graefjes

A destination for American desserts, De Drie Graefjes takes first place in size and classic flavors. Think chewy oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip walnut, and that winning combination of white chocolate chip and macadamia (a must try). Crispy edges, a buttery center and if you visit Amsterdam in the winter, you’ll find some cranberries in there too.

cup a la cake amsterdam - chocolate chip cookies

Cup a la cake

A cookie game so strong, cup a la cake might need to reconsider their name. A counter in the back is piled high with countless varieties, from beautiful buttery chunks with chocolate chips or crispy caramel cubes to double chocolate cookies made brownie style (expect a moist and cake-like interior). Did I mention the tubs of cookie DOUGH? Pretty sure cup a la cookie heaven is more on brand guys.

Sea Salt and Chocolate

Tucked away in an unassuming street in Amsterdam’s Pijp neighborhood, sea salt and chocolate is already one step ahead of the game. Reheating their cookies in the oven makes them extra comforting, soft and gooey, especially when there’s a heavy dose of chocolate involved (think deeply rich dark chocolate to a river of creamy white chocolate).

Deer Mama Vegan Mylk & Burger Bar Amsterdam - Cookie Dough Cookies

Deer Mama Vegan Mylk & Burger Bar

Not only does Deer Mama prove vegan cookies can be just as good as the real deal, they might just be my favorite cookies in the whole of Amsterdam. The cookie dough cookies have a cushiony soft center and LOTS of melted dark chocolate chips, balanced with a sprinkling of sea salt – this is pure perfection, plant-based or not.
