Some bakeshops are worth travelling South for, and the South East Cakery is one of them. Nestled amongst residential houses in East Dulwich, this cakery-meets-café brings an unexpected cool vibe to a decidedly calm area. With signs saying “sweet before savoury & always after” and “muffin’s gonna stop us now”, the South East Cakery has customers grinning from the word go – and that’s before biting into their baked goods.
Decked out on the counter, treats are just as whimsical and wonderful including snicker-inspired shortbreads, s’mores sandwiches (think fluffy marshmallow and ultra-thick chocolate ganache between chocolate-swirled cookies), and birthday cake truffles that are like bite-sized snacks of cookie dough covered in white chocolate and sprinkles. Soft, sweet and small, these addictive doughy delights are gone within seconds.
Layer cakes know no limits either. The South East Cakery often has five varieties on display, ranging from gold-dusted cherry bakewell cakes to chocolate explosions (think chocolate shards, chocolate drips and cookies bursting out the top) and red velvet finished off with a ball of red velvet cookie dough. Like I said, some bakeshops are worth travelling South for.
