A popular Roman street food, supplì is a fried rice ball of risotto, which is coated in breadcrumbs and traditionally filled with tomato sauce. It might not sound like much, but once you’ve tried one, it becomes impossible to walk passed any pizzeria without sneaking in a supplì too – especially when they are filled with other little surprises. This is my guide to Rome’s best supplì….
Pizzarium
Come for the pizza, stay for the supplì. Pizzarium is considered one of the best places for pizza al taglio (by the slice), but chef Gabriele Bonci will steal your heart with supplì too. Offered complementary with our box of pizza, the gigantic oval-shaped goodness is filled with tomato sauce and a never-ending string of melted mozzarella.

Trappizino
Trappizino might be famous for inventing an entirely new pizza hybrid (triangular pockets of dough with fillings), their supplì offerings are just as noteworthy. Taking inspiration from other Italian dishes, the rotating line-up includes options like Amatriciana (guanciale, tomato, Pecorino Romano cheese, black pepper) and a more-ish Melanzane with eggplant cubes, comforting layers of tomato sauce and parmesan.
Multiple locations
I Supplì
An unassuming deli in Trastevere draws in a crowd of Italian locals in need of their fix of Roman street food. That’s always a good sign. The other good sign is the name of this place; I Supplì fries the street food in various flavors, but my favorite is their cacio e pepe (Rome’s signature pasta dish). Packed with Pecorino Romano cheese and pepper, it’s super creamy and gooey on the inside, while crisp on the outside.
Address: Via di S. Francesco a Ripa, 137, 00153
Supplizio
Supplì is typically eaten as a snack, but you can easily make a meal out of them at Supplizio. Here, they are much bigger in size and available in all sorts of flavors, from classic to carbonara to mozzarella-stuffed and more. It’s fun sampling them all, though you can’t beat the classic.
